Campaign by NGOs to highlight caste system in India

Durban, Aug. 29. (PTI): Several non-governmental organisations (NGOs) based in India and abroad have launched a campaign here to ensure that the caste system is given a high profile during the World Racism Conference, which begins here on Friday. The NGOs, which have arrived here to highlight the issue include Human Rights Forum For Dalit Liberation, Dalit Sector Support Team and Ambedkar Centre For Justice And Peace -- an NGO based in Canada. The Indian NGOs have even set up a stall near the International Conference Centre to spread information about the alleged oppression of dalits, scheduled castes, tribals and other marginalised people in India. A spokesman of one of the NGOs, S Karunakaran, said even after 53 years of Independence, the dalits and others in India have had no respite from the "gruesome human rights violations being perpetrated against them". President of the Ambedkar Centre For Justice And Peace, Yogesh Varhade, accused the Indian Government of not adopting the UN principles on discrimination. "The international community has to put pressure on the Indian Government to abolish this apartheid of Asia which is much bigger than the apartheid witnessed in South Africa", he said.
