Dalit Christians stage dharna

VIJAYAWADA: Members of various Christian organisations staged a dharna at Bishop’s House at Ring Road centre, demanding appointment of Dalit Bishop for the city.

Members of Newmen Association, Catholic Association, Laity Commission and Vincent De Paul Society, armed with placards, protested against the discrimination shown towards Dalits and demanded the church authorities to appoint a Dalit Bishop for city Diocese.

They said 96 per cent of Catholic Dalits were given a raw deal, while non-Dalits, who comprise just 4 per cent, were given the privilege to head the diocese.

The dharna started at 10 a.m and ended at 6 p.m. The agitation will continue on Monday also, said a release from the action committee.
