Demand to discuss caste system at UN racism meet

WASHINGTON: Ambedkar Memorial Trust of America will stage a protest in front of the Indian Embassy here on July 3 demanding that caste-based discrimination be discussed at the forthcoming UN conference on racism, racial discrimination, xenophobia and related intolerance.

"Many historians put Dalit persecution close to 3,000 years old, the longest ever persecution in the history of mankind, of any single group, and this persecution continues to persist even today," chairman of the trust, Laxmi N Berwa, said in a statement Sunday.

He said that his demand for including caste discrimination on the UN agenda is also supported by other organisations like Association of Indian Muslims of America, Silver Spring, Maryland; Balmiki Sabha of USA, Yuba City, California; and Guru Gobind Singh Foundation of America. (PTI)
