Desecration of Ambedkar statue at Janekal

Protest takes ugly turn

GULBARGA, June 24

Three buses were damaged in stone-throwing incidents in the city today by some miscreants when members of a Dalit organisation were protesting against the alleged desecration of an Ambedkar statue at Janekal village in Manvi taluk of Raichur district. It may be recalled that some miscreants had reportedly desecrated a statue of Ambedkar at Janekal on Friday by garlanding it with slippers and liquor bottles. Protesting against this and demanding the arrest of the miscreants, the members of the Dalit organisation staged a rasta roko at Nandihal on the Sindanur-Manvi road.

As the situation was still tense at Janekal, a unit of the District Reserve Police has been stationed at the village. The Dalits there have threatened that if the miscreants were not arrested within 48 hours, they would intensify their agitation.
