‘Forum needed to fight atrocities against Dalits’

The formation of a forum of like- minded people is very much needed to fight against the atrocities on Dalits and to bring awareness about their rights, opined the many participants in a meeting held by Confederation of Scheduled Castes and Tribes Organisation.

The meeting was organised to discuss about the increasing atrocities on Dalits by the forward castes in both the districts of Dakshina Kannada and Udupi. In the meeting many people expressed that all social organisations and people should render support to Dalits in fighting against the atrocities aganist them. Social equality and reformation of the society is also needed,they said.

The participants in the meeting also stressed the need for establishing offices of the Human Rights Commission at the district level, which would be helpful to Dalits to take immediate action about the atrocities on Dalits.

At the district-level, the District Superintendent of Police should own the responsibility in controlling atriocities on Dalits, they said. The participants included freedom fighter Mr Ammembala Balappa, Confederation President, Mr Lolaksha, Journalist, B V Seetharam, Mangalore University SC and ST Employees Welfare Association President, Dr Phakeerappa, Mr P B Desa of PUCL, Mr Purandara, Mr Mohanangayya Swami, Mr Yadava Shetty, Mr Vasudeva Bolar Ms Hilda, and others.
