Nation pays tribute to Ambedkar

NEW DELHI: Vice-President Krishan Kant, Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee and Congress president Sonia Gandhi on Saturday offered floral tributes to B R Ambedkar, the architect of Indian constitution, on his 110th birth anniversary.

Former prime minister V P Singh, Lok Sabha speaker G M C Balayogi, Union Ministers L K Advani, S Jatiya, Maneka Gandhi, Uma Bharti, Congress leaders Manmohan Singh and G Venkataswami and former BJP president Bangaru Laxman were among other leaders who paid floral tributes before the statue of Ambedkar in Parliament House compound.

NCP president Sharad Pawar, RPI leader Ramdas Athawale and Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit also remembered Babasaheb Ambedkar.

A large number of people visited the Parliament compound and also raised slogans like "samvidhan sanshodhan band karo (stop constitution review)" and "jai bhim jai bharat".

Hymns by Buddhist monks from Thailand, Japan, Burma and several parts of India, besides songs in praise of Ambedkar presented by the song and drama division of the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting marked the Ambedkar Jayanti. (PTI)
