Plea to distribute gomala land for Dalits

RAICHUR, Feb 5

The Raichur unit of Dalit Sangarsha Samithi (DSS), in a memorandum to the Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe Welfare Committee, have urged it to consider the plea for proper distribution of gomala land, ban on sale of liquor and prevent atrocities against Dalits among other things.

Raichur is one of the most backward districts and even today, caste system, slavery and atrocities against Dalits continue, the DSS said and added that Dalits were not getting facilities which they were supposed to get according to the Constitution. They have also requested that importance should be given to the welfare of the Dalits.

Following the sale of liquor, the financial condition of Dalits had become bad, they said and requested that not only the government should impose a ban on sale of liquor but ban the Toddy Tappers Co-operative Society.

In addition, they have also requested the government to give additional gomala land for the Dalits, implementation of Guruprasad Report on hostels to solve hostel problems, said DSS Convenor Sharanappa Dinni.

PLEA: The North Karnataka Students Welfare Committee in a separate memorandum to the SC, ST Welfare Committee, has sought quick solutions to hostel problems and provide special educational facilities.

The Social Welfare Department in the district has neglected the hostels, they alleged and added that for the past 40 years no basic civic amenities had been provided for the hostels. There is no proper drinking water facility, no proper toilets or wardens.

They have requested a permanent building for the girl students, beds for all hostelites, buckets and wardens and placement for meritorious students, said Committee President M Eeranna and General Secretary Bhavraj Alkod in a press release.
