Report on STs released

PONDICHERRY, JULY 18. Dr. A. Arokianathan, Controller of Examinations, Pondicherry University, today released a report prepared by the Department of Anthropology and the Centre for Future Studies, on the population of Scheduled Tribes in the Union Territory.

He said the report would go a long way in ameliorating the sufferings of the ST population. It would also help them get benefits under various development projects. Mr. Justice. Dr. David Annousamy, a former judge of the Madras High court, received the first copy.

Dr. T. Subramanyam Naidu, Head of the Department of Anthropoloy and Project Officer, said a team took up the exercise visiting 150 villages in all four regions. The report recommended that the Administration sanction tribal status to Irula, malaikuravan, kattunayakan, Yeukula and Kuruman (original inhabitants) and malayali and konda Reddi (migrants). The STs formed just one per cent of the Union Territory's population.
