HYDERABAD: As a first step towards conducting elections to the local bodies, Panchayat Raj Commissioner S Chellappa today submitted a report to the State Government notifying reservation to the Panchayat Raj bodies, including Gram Panchayats, MPTCs, ZPTCs and Zilla Parishads.

Disclosing this at a news conference here today, Chellappa said that the Zilla Parishads of Khammam and Visakhapatnam were reserved for STs like in the past while changes were effected for other ZPs.

One-third of the ZPs were reserved for women, including in the general category in consonance with the State Government’s policy of women empowerment.

While Khammam ZP was reserved for ST (general), Visakhapatnam was reserved for ST (women).

Among four ZPs reserved for SCs, Krishna was reserved for SC women while East Godavari, West Godavari and Adilabad ZPs were reserved for SC general.

Out of the seven ZPs reserved for BCs, Chittoor and Nalgonda were reserved for women.

In the unreserved category, three ZPs out of the remaining nine were allotted to women.

The process of notifying reservation was done one day before the deadline set by the Andhra Pradesh High

Court and the list of reservation for MPTCs and ZPTCs would be released tomorrow, he said.

The Scheduled Caste/Scheduled Tribe population was decided from the 1991 census figures whereas the BC population was derived from the multi-purpose household survey conducted between March 16 and May 28.

The government received 52,000 complaints, which were settled in a meeting with local officials.

Another survey was conducted after some groups from Kurnool, Prakasam, Mahboobnagar and Ranga Reddy districts challenged the census in the court, he said.
