BANGALORE, Aug 1

The Ambedkar Research Institute and D Devaraj Urs Institute have been entrusted the task or preparing a report on the utilisation of 'Ganga Kalyana' scheme, by Scheduled Castes / Scheduled Tribes, Backward Classes and Minority beneficiaries and the report will be ready in another four months, Minister for Social Welfare Kagodu Thimmappa informed the Legislative Council today.

Replying to a question raised by Mr K B Shanappa ((JD-U), the minister admitted it has come to the notice of the government that the 'Ganga Kalyana' scheme (providing borewells) is not being utilised properly by the beneficiaries. "The government will take appropriate action after these two institutes submit the reports. Meanwhile, at the lower level, legislators have been asked to regularly keep a tab on the implementation of the scheme in their respective constituencies," he added.

At present 5,000 beneficiaries have been identified for the scheme and it is being implemented through a capital fund donated to the Backward Classes Development Commission along with the Central aid.

The suppliers for the scheme will be selected from the list already prepared by a High Power Committee in 1998. The government wants to ensure that the beneficiaries utilise the scheme properly, Mr Thimmappa said.
