SC/STs have failed to utilise available services: minister

Minister for Social Welfare Kagodu Thimmappa today regretted that the scheduled castes and scheduled tribes have failed to utilise the available facilities and to establish their own identity in society.

He felt that the evaluation of the results of the facilities given to the SCs/STs is necessary and added that the SC and ST Development Corporation managing director has been directed to carry out the evaluation.

He was speaking at a function organised by the Karnataka SC & ST Development Corporation to distribute autorickshaws and financial aid to the beneficiaries. The facilities were distributed in memory of late I P D Salappa.

The Minister called upon the beneficiaries to utilise the facilities in a proper manner. Identifying the needs and aspirations of the community and striving to achieve the same was the need of the hour, he said. Mr Thimmappa alleged that instead of utilising the allotted 18 per cent grant toward the development of the SCs / STs, the Bangalore Mahanagara Palike was diverting the funds for other purposes. The minister gave away 75 autorickshaws, Rs 14.54 lakh grants and seed money and Rs 39.86 lakh term-loan for the dependents of safai karmacharies of the Bangalore Urban District.

Minister of State for Social Welfare Baburao Chauhan, Minister for Tourism and Haj Roshan Baig, Legislators Mr Ramalinga Reddy, Mr Suresh Kumar and Mr Dinesh Gundurao, Managing Director of the Department B H Anil Kumar, Mr Ashok Salappa, Member, Safaikarmachari Bangalore District Implementing Committee were present on the occasion.
