Senior Congress leader T N Narasimhamurthy has appealed to AICC President Sonia Gandhi to give adequate representation to the members belonging to scheduled caste and scheduled tribe in the Congress Working Committee to be reconstituted shortly.

In a letter to Ms Sonia, a copy of which has been released to the press on Saturday, Mr Narasimhamurthy said the AICC should nominate at least five members belonging to the SCs/STs to the CWC. The total strength of CWC is 24, he added.

The Congress leader said as a representative of Scheduled Caste he felt that it was his bounden duty to draw her (Ms Sonia) attention in this regard. The party had identified Scheduled Caste community leaders such as Dr B R Ambedkar, Babu Jagajivanram, D Sanjeevaiah and others.

However, over the years, it is most unfortunate that though there are a good number of competent Scheduled Caste leaders are available in the country, they have neither been identified nor encouraged properly.

As a result, the members of the community who were considered to be the backbone of the party started deserting the party, which has affected the Congress. I strongly feel it is most relevant to mention here that certain national level political leaders are focussing scheduled caste leaders in key positions and are attracting the SC masses towards their parties, he pointed.

He further said that this could be countered effectively by inducting dynamic leaders from SC community. The Party has to pay attention in this regard on priority basis and see that injustice is set right, he added.
