Unanimity to revamp reservation policy

BHUBANESWAR: There is a need to analyse the reasons for the failure of reservation policy, opined Justice Lingaraj Rath at the national-level convention of the deprived classes, here on Wednesday.

Rath said the makers of the Constitution never thought that the reservation policy meant for 10 years would be extended six times. The political analysts should find out the methods to make the policy successful in future. The reservation policy should not be applicable to the creamy layer of the backward classes, he said.

Speaking on the occasion, general secretary of Orissa Pradesh Congress Committee Bipin Dash said the issue of casteism was raised by the then Opposition parties to counter the popularity of Congress.

Prof Hrudananda Ray said qualification should be the only criteria for promotion, otherwise the competitive spirit in general would be affected.

Editor of Oriya Daily ‘‘Sambad’’ Soumya Ranjan Patnaik said qualification should be the criteria for getting second promotion.

Former president of Orissa Police Service Association Rabi Das said the government had never tried to find out how many Harijan and tribal families have benefited by reservation.
