The Times of India News Service

LUCKNOW: Uttar Pradesh unit of the CPI(M-L) has demanded reservation in jobs for the most other backward castes, minorities and special drive to clear the backlog of quota for Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes in Uttar Pradesh. The party, which held its 7th convention at Ghazipur from June 26 to 29, demanded that the adivasis and banvasis of Sonebhadra-Mirzapur-Chandaudli be given the status of tribal.

By passing a resolution, the CPI(M-L) termed the chief minister Rajnath Singh's resolve to give reservation to MOBCs mere a ploy to win support of those communities.

The convention felt that the creation of a Third Front, keeping both the BJP and the Congress at bay, was essential but it should not include Tamil Nadu chief minister Jayalalitha. The CPI( M-L) leaders also criticised Mulayam Singh Yadav and felt that he was tilting towards the BJP.

The CPI( M- L ) leaders said that the Samajwadi Party and Bahujan Samaj Party were vying with each other to win support of the upper castes in Uttar Pradesh. The convention resolved that the government should issue a fresh notification for trying the BJP leaders accused of Babri Masjid demolition case at Ayodhya. The convention elected Akhilendra Pratap Singh, state secretary of the UP unit of the party, for another three years term along with 23-members state committee . The convention, which was attended by 300 members, decided to intensify agitation against the BJP, state secretary of the CPI( M-L), Arun Kumar said.
