The BJP Scheduled Castes Morcha today served an ultimatum of 15 days for Chief Minister S M Krishna to express commitment for filling up 25,000 backlog vacancies in government jobs pertaining to Dalits as well as continuing reservation in promotions for them as per two GOs issued by the Centre recently providing for such benefits.

The Morcha would launch a state-wide protest programme as well as awareness campaign if the chief minister failes to make a commitment regarding filling up of backlog vacancies and continuing reservation benefits within 15 days, Morcha State President D S Veeraiah told a press conference here.

He pointed out that the Union government had brought about amendments to the Constitution and issued two GOs (dated July 20 and October 3) providing for filling up backlog vacancies of Dalits as well as reservations to them in promotions. These GOs of the Centre would help fill up over three lakh vacancies of Dalits at the central level, he said. Arguing that the GOs had proved that the BJP was persuing pro-Dalit policy, he demanded that Chief Minister S M Krishna, if he had any concern for Dalits, should initiate steps to follow the path showed by the Centre. Pointing out that the state had about 25,000 backlog vacancies of Dalits, he urged the chief minister to fill them up.

The Morcha office-bearers would also hold discussions with the chief minister and submit a memorandum to him in this regard, Mr Veeraiah said. The chief minister should provide an explanation on the reasons for delay in the filling up of backlog vacacnies and also make an open statement on when they would be filled up, he said and threatened to stage a protest if the demands were not met with. We will go to the house of each Dalit in the state and explain to him what has happened,he said.
