WHILE GIVING a setback to the ruling BJP, the BSP has retained the mayorship of this walled city by defeating the BJP candidate by over a margin of 20,000 votes. Doing better, the Congress candidate finished third on tally. The hopes of the Samajwadi Party were shattered again whose candidate figured sixth in the list apparently as the appeal of Mulayam Singh Yadav even failed to mobilise the Muslim voters.

The BSP candidate Sahid Akhlaq registered his victory over his nearest rival BJP candidate Pawan Goel. After completion of eighth round of counting Sahid bagged 1,21,510 votes against the 1,01,146 votes of Pawan Goel.

For councillors post too, the BJP lost 7 seats in comparison with the last tally. On the other hand, the BSP has gained 7 seats this time and so the Congress and Lok Dal. But the astonishing performance of independents has forced all political parties to introspect themselves. The independents have bagged 12 seats of councillors out of 70 seats
