BIHAR DALIT VIKAS SAMITI, Patna, started with 11 Scheduled Caste Volunteers, by
Father Dr Jose Kananaikil sj, in 1982, after an incident of rape and
attrocities on the Scheduled Castes at Barh (pronounced as Bhad) in Bihar -
unreported and unrecorded initially by the local Police - today has grown up to
a membership of 100,000 families in 12 Districts of united Bihar. Organised into 14 independant Centers, it
had a Central Office at Barh, and functioned from a rented building. It now has on role a large number of SCs,
OBCs, and also a few caste hindu sympathisers.
May be there are some STs also.
There are a large number of active SC Women activists and Members.
In June 2K, the Central Office of BDVS moved into a new
two-storey building of its own, on Bailey Road, Rukunpura, Patna. With halls for meetings and trainings, the
building houses the Administrative Office.
It is planned to have a Documentation
Centre on Dalit Struggles and Identity; Human
Rights Centre to fight for Social Justice for Dalits; Training Centre on Dalit Community Building, Panchayati Raj; a Youth Coordination Centre, and a Contact Centre for regular meetings with
acdemicians, officials, police, journalists, MLAs and others.

Years of Independence have gone by. The
shrill cry of the Dalits "We too count" is loud and clear. Will We have to wait for another Millennium
to earn our Place? May the Independence
Day on the next August 15th be a striving one for us.

Justice-seeking Dalit Society!
